When you think of Chrysler, there's one thing that comes to mind-American pride. The Detroit powerhouse has been shipping out beautiful machines since 1925.

As it stands today, they've still got the edge on sleek and powerful American pride with over 5 production models driving off of dealer's parking lots across the country. There's the classy 300 Sedan, the versatile Town and Country Mini-Van, and the luxurious Pacifica. From the inception of the brand, Chrysler has consistently developed smart and sophisticated vehicles. No matter if you're driving a new release or a classic, eventually you're going to need to upgrade the powertrain control module - also known as the PCM.

Chrysler Powertrain Control Modules

The PCM in a Chrysler engine is essentially the engine's control unit. This tiny computer controls over 100 functions in the vehicle from the check engine light to the fuel injection parameters. Like any other mechanical part, eventually it's going to malfunction and need replacing. You could take the car in to a mechanic and have the repairs done-but at what cost? With a few simple steps and some basic tools, you can easily replace the PCM from the comfort of your home garage. If you can change your oil, you can replace your Chrysler's computer.

Replacing a PCM

To begin, simply disconnect the negative terminal on your vehicle's battery. Once you've completed this step, it's time to find the wiring harness. Unplug the module located near the top of the engine compartment-you'll find it on the driver's side.

Once you've located the two wiring harnesses, simply slip off the cover by squeezing the red clips. Next, you'll need to have your wrench ready with an 8mm socket. Remove the module's two bolts and lift the old one out. Once the PCM is removed, pop the new unit in and just complete the steps in reverse. It's super simple!
